Earlier this year, lenders to private sector rival Kingfisher Airlines took a stake in the loss-making carrier controlled by Vijay Mallya. A consortium of Air India's lenders last month gave broad approval to its financial restructuring, a source said, providing relief for the cash-strapped airline reeling under USD 4 billion of debt.
Air India's lending group has 26 banks. In addition to State Bank of India, IDBI and Bank of Baroda also have heavy loan exposure to the airline. The restructuring plan must be approved by the federal government before it is implemented.
India's airlines are struggling with surging oil prices, high sales tax on jet fuel and below-cost pricing driven by fierce competition, leading to losses for most of them. Indian airlines are forecast to lose up to USD 3 billion in the fiscal year that ends in March 2012. State-owned Air India, operating on government life support, is expected to account for more than half of that, the Centre for Asia Pacific Aviation (CAPA) has said.
Air India said its passenger revenue rose 12.3 per cent in November, compared with the year-ago period, and domestic load factor stood at almost two-thirds of its total capacity.
Kingfisher in March issued shares equivalent to 23.4 per cent of the airline to a consortium of 13 banks, also led by State Bank of India, after conversion of compulsory convertible preference shares at 64.48 rupees a share. The stock closed on Thursday at Rs 21.25.

iOS still doesn't have quick access to apps like certain Android launchers, but GigaOm notes that you can use the Notification center to quickly access certain apps. Here's how.
GigaOm explains:
In Notification Center, tapping on notifications launches the app they're associated with. Your first instinct might be to clear out all notifications associated with each app to keep your Center clear. Don't. Just leave one for each app, and then you can use the Notification Center as a quick launcher for those programs.
Since the Notification Center tells you which notifications are unread, keeping one notification for each app in the menu doesn't heavily impede your ability to see new messages, and it can save you from swiping through a lot of screens for those heavily used apps. Hit the link to read more.

If idle hands are the devil's playground, Alice Newsom has a one way ticket to heaven.
For four years, the 91 year old knitter has knit 445 scarves and shawls in all different shapes and colors.
Every 33 hours she adds another to the growing pile in her Fort Myers home.
This month, Alice created 9 shawls, but they won't sit in her home for long.?
They'll end up in Susan G. Komen Project Hope Bags which are given to breast cancer patients.
Sandi Shank was diagnosed with breast cancer last year.
"It will make or break you," she said.
One of the first gifts she got before treatment was a Project Hope Bag.? Inside - her very own shawl.
After surgery, Shank's cancer is gone, but her shawl will stay with her forever.
With her eyesight slowly slipping, Newsom isn't sure how much longer she can knit.? But every stitch brings her one step closer to helping someone else.
"This is something they use every time they are in treatment and at home.? Every day they use my gift," said Newsom.

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? Stock index futures were lower on Tuesday as investors found little reason to make big bets in what was expected to be a light-volume session following the previous week's gains.
The S&P 500 has risen for four straight sessions and turned positive for the year on Friday. Improving economic data helped boost equities last week. The gains were amplified by the light pre-holiday trading.
Investors looked ahead to November Midwest manufacturing data, scheduled for release at 8:30 a.m. EST as well as S&P/Case-Shiller home price data for October due at 9 a.m. EST and the December consumer confidence report at 10 a.m. EST.
Home prices are seen edging lower from the previous month, while the confidence reading is seen rising to 58.3 from 56.0.
The data comes after better-than-expected housing and jobless claims data last week that confirmed a slowly improving economy.
S&P 500 futures fell 3.1 points and below fair value, a formula that evaluates pricing by taking into account interest rates, dividends and time to expiration on the contract. Dow Jones industrial average futures slipped 18 points, and Nasdaq 100 futures were off 2 points.
Markets were flat globally following the long Christmas weekend, with European stocks dipping 0.01 percent.
Bank of America Corp (BAC.N) is lagging behind major U.S. competitors in complying with new capital rules, leading the bank to consider even more asset sales, sources said. Shares of the Dow component edged 0.7 percent lower to $5.56 in premarket trading.
Sears Holdings Corp (SHLD.O) plans to close 100-120 Kmart and Sears full-line stores and sees its adjusted fourth-quarter earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization falling by more than half from a year ago.
Equities extended their gains to close out a fourth straight winning session on Friday after the strong economic data. In addition, investors hope Congressional approval of a two-month extension of a payroll tax cut will help boost growth in 2012.

Grumpy? Giddy? According to some measures, bees appear to experience moods.
Image: Charles Krebs/Corbis
If you have never watched bees carefully, you are missing out. Look closely as they gently curl and uncoil their mouthparts around food, and you will sense that they are not just eating but enjoying their meal. Watch a bit more, and the hesitant flicks and sags of their antennae seem to convey some kind of emotion. Do those twitches signal annoyance? Or something like enthusiasm?
Whether bees really experience any of these emotions is an open scientific question. It is also an important one, with implications for how we should treat not just bees but the great majority of animals. Recently studies by Melissa Bateson and her colleagues at Newcastle University in England have rekindled the debate over these issues by showing that honeybees may experience something akin to moods.
Using simple behavioral tests, Bate?son?s team showed that honeybees under stress tend to be pessimistic. Other tests have demonstrated that monkeys, dogs and starlings all tend to react similarly under duress and likewise see the proverbial glass as half empty. Although this finding does not?and cannot?prove that bees experience humanlike emotions, it does give pause. We should take seriously the possibility that insects, too, have emotions.
Beeline to the Brain
First, a little bit about bees. They are members of the diverse group of animals lacking backbones?indeed, more than 95 percent of all animal species are invertebrates. Despite the varied and often nuanced behaviors they can exhibit, invertebrates are sometimes regarded as life?s second string, a mindless and unfeeling band of alien critters. If that seems somewhat melodramatic, just consider our willingness to boil some of them alive.
Those judgments tend to arise from arguments about invertebrates? failure to demonstrate the behaviors we usually associate with a pain response. Whereas the yelps and grimaces of other mammals are familiar to us as announcements of hurt, invertebrates can appear to take their injuries in stride. Insects are commonly observed using their crushed limbs with undiminished force when walking, for example, and a locust will reportedly carry on with a meal while it is being eaten by a mantis.
Other attempts to draw a dividing line between creatures that feel and those that do not are rooted in comparative brain anatomy. Invertebrates lack a cortex, an amygdala and many of the other major brain structures routinely implicated in human emotion. Their nervous systems are quite minimalist compared with ours: we have roughly 100,000 bee brains? worth of neurons in our head. Some invertebrates, however, including insects, do possess a rudimentary version of our stress response system. So the question remains: Do they experience emotion in a way that we would recognize, or do they simply react to the world with an elaborate set of reflexes?
To gain some traction on this fascinating question, Bateson?s team followed the lead of recent investigations on ?pessimistic biases? in animals. In humans, the pessimistic bias refers to our well-known tendency to perceive threats or anticipate negative outcomes more frequently when we are feeling anxious or depressed. For example, in tests where people are shown ambiguous statements such as ?the doctor examined little Emily?s growth,? anxious individuals are less likely than others to conclude that Emily is fine and only her height was being checked.
Although the link between bad moods and negative judgments may not be terribly surprising, this correlation is still useful. We rely on it in our daily lives to make informed guesses about how people are feeling by observing their actions and choices. Scientifically, we can use it to study the emotions of creatures unable to tell us directly how they feel. The key here is to set up a controlled situation where animals encounter an ambiguous stimulus?think of it as a nonverbal version of the Emily statement.

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. (AP) ? The athletic abilities of star running back Adrian Peterson led the Minnesota Vikings to give him a seven-year, $100 million contract extension before the season started.
Now, they hope his recuperative abilities are just as good and he is able to live up to being the highest-paid running back in the NFL.
Minnesota expects Peterson to be recovered from left knee surgery for two torn ligaments in time to start the 2012 season.
"We expect most people to recover from this injury in eight to nine months and instead of comparing Adrian to any other player at any level that's had an anterior cruciate ligament, and they happen every day, I would really like Adrian to stand on his own merit because Adrian, I feel, is very unique," Vikings head trainer Eric Sugarman said Monday.
"Adrian has a great work ethic. Adrian has the DNA to heal quickly, which he has shown in the past. He certainly will have the desire and the mental toughness to be able to get through the rehab process, which will take months and months, as you know. So, I think if anyone can get better quickly and safely in that time period, it would be Adrian Peterson."
Peterson tore his ACL and MCL when he was hit in the side of the knee by Washington Redskins safety DeJon Gomes in the third quarter of Saturday's 33-26 win at Washington. An MRI on Saturday evening revealed the ligament tears and meniscus damage, and Peterson will undergo surgery within the next seven to 10 days.
Backup Toby Gerhart, who started three games earlier this season when Peterson was out with a high ankle sprain, will start Sunday in the season-finale against the Chicago Bears. A second-round pick in 2010, Gerhart has filled in well for Peterson and notched the first 100-yard rushing game of his career with 109 yards on 11 carries Saturday. But the Vikings expect Gerhart's time as the starter to be short-lived.
"He sets his goals extremely high and he's one of those guys who, when he puts his mind to it, there's no reason to ever doubt that he can achieve what he sets his mind to," Minnesota coach Leslie Frazier said of Peterson. "We're looking forward to his attacking this rehab like he's attacked every offseason, to come back and play and be even better than he was before. I know with Eric and our medical staff, they're going to do everything they can to get him back on the field and ready to go when we line up in that first football game next season."
Gerhart's emergence over the past month at least offers optimism if Peterson has to miss extended time next season.
Gerhart has had the top three rushing days of his career in the past four weeks. On his first carry after Peterson left Saturday's game, Gerhart showed some big-play ability of his own, busting free for a 67-yard run, the longest of his short career.
Believing Peterson will be ready for the first game of 2012 and knowing Gerhart is available if needed, Frazier said the team wouldn't change its run-first offensive approach.
"One of things about Adrian's absence earlier in the season, we had a chance to get Toby some extended snaps and we really haven't altered the offense by any means," Frazier said. "Toby has done a very good job in Adrian's absence. Did a great job (Saturday) of stepping in and performing and rushing for over 100 yards. So we really haven't had to alter things. We really don't plan to. We look forward to eventually getting Adrian back on the field, but we don't think we have to really alter the offense."

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- At age 16, Paw Pree was separated from her family and on the run, fleeing an oppressive military regime in her homeland, Burma.
A member of the minority Karen tribe, Pree joined 15 other runaways and worked her way through jungles and safe houses, eventually finding shelter in a refugee camp in Thailand, where she lived for seven years.
Now she lives in a Lakewood apartment, attends Cuyahoga Community College, plans to go to nursing school and works as a social worker at Asian Services in Action.
Because of her language skills -- she speaks Thai, Burmese, English and her native tongue, Karen -- and her commitment to helping people, Pree is a lifeline for other Southeast Asian refugees being resettled in the Cleveland area.
"I love working with people," Pree, 25, said in a recent interview. "As a Christian, Jesus is my role model. He helped and cured a lot of people."
Between 400 and 500 refugees, Muslims and Christians, from Burma (now known as Myanmar) are living in Greater Cleveland, Pree said. "I'm the one who can talk to them," she said. "I'm their voice."
But she is more than just an interpreter. And she helps non-Asians as well, mentoring preschool to high school kids through an Asian Services program.
"She might get a call at 2 a.m. from someone saying, 'I'm in the hospital,' and she will go there," said her supervisor, Kitty Leung. "People generally rely on her a lot."
While living in the camp, Pree studied English and was an outreach worker for the American Refugee Committee, which was providing services there and working to resettle the more than 4,000 residents of the camp.
Year after year, Pree hoped to get free, but she knew that those who got out usually had family or political connections in the Western world.
It was a sad life, she said, watching people come and go and checking a board every day to see whether her name was posted for a departure, only to be let down over and over again.
"I felt no hope, no future living in the camp," she said. "You live to die."
Finally, in 2008, Pree saw her name posted. "I was so happy," she said. "I ran to my supervisor and said, 'I found my name. I'm going to be leaving you soon.' "
Thirty minutes later, she said, she was told she was going to Cleveland. "I said, 'Where's Cleveland? Do you have a map?' "
Two days later -- July 16, 2008 -- she landed in Cleveland. "I'm all by myself all the way," she said. "I don't even know who's going to pick me up."
A person from Catholic Charities met her at the airport and shuttled her to a new life in a strange new world.
"You have to have hope," Pree said. "And be willing to work hard."
Pree, who has two brothers and one sister, has not seen her family since she fled her homeland. And her father and mother, rice farmers, have no phone.
When she got to Cleveland, it was arranged for her to call her mother who had to walk an hour and a half to a phone.
But Pree didn't want to say too much in their conversation because she believed the phones could be tapped and her family fears the majority's regime.
"I said, 'Hi mom,' " Pree said, recalling her first contact with her mother in seven years. "She was quiet. I said, 'Are you there?' "
Pree said she deeply misses her family, but her faith, she said, tempers the pain of separation.
"Even if we don't see each other one more time," she said. "We have hope that we will see each other in Heaven."

HONOLULU?? First lady Michelle Obama got into the Christmas spirit Saturday by helping NORAD to track Santa Claus ? and the defense agency needed the help, with a record number of calls from anxious children.
Volunteers at Peterson Air Force Base in Colorado had fielded more than 80,000 calls Saturday evening, breaking the previous record. Also, Santa's NORAD Facebook page approached 980,000 "likes." Last year, Santa had 716,000 "likes."
NORAD, the North American Aerospace Defense Command, has been telling children about Santa's whereabouts every year since 1955. That was the year a Colorado Springs newspaper ad invited kids to call Santa on a hotline, but the number had a typo, and dozens of kids wound up talking to the Continental Aerospace Defense Command, NORAD's predecessor.
Story: Ho! Ho! Ho! Watch Santa Claus go!Other political news of note
Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and Texas Gov. Rick Perry have failed to qualify for Virginia's March 6 Republican primary.
The officers on duty played along and began sharing reports on Santa's progress. It's now a deep-rooted tradition at NORAD, a joint U.S.-Canada command that monitors the North American skies and seas from a control center at Peterson.
Santa's first stop in the U.S. came at 9:02 p.m. MST in Atlanta, said Canadian Navy Lt. Al Blondin.
Mrs. Obama answered several calls in Kailua, Hawaii, from children who wanted to know how close Santa was to their homes.
A White House transcript contained details of several calls.
Mrs. Obama told a girl named Summer that Santa was over Finland.
"And I can see a glowing light, and it looks like, from the satellite, that he's got all nine reindeer with him, and it looks like his sleigh is pretty full," she told Summer. "It looks like a full sleigh of toys. So I hope you've been good this year. Summer, have you been?"
Summer responded that she was good, and that she wanted a Clawdeen Monster High Doll with a pair of shoes.
The first lady told Summer that Santa "only comes to your house after he knows you're asleep. So no matter where he is in the world, you've got to be asleep."
Kaelyn Brayden asked the first lady "how many fireplaces do you guys have in the White House?"
Mrs. Obama didn't have an exact count.
"There's almost a fireplace in every single room, and there are dozens and dozens of rooms," she told the caller. However, she said, Santa usually comes down the White House's Yellow Oval Room fireplace.
"Yeah, that's where we put our Santa tree," the first lady explained. "And he usually comes down that one, and that's where Malia and Sasha get their gifts."
The first family is spending the holidays in Hawaii and otherwise spent a low-key Christmas Eve out of the spotlight.
President Barack Obama spent his first morning in Hawaii at the multimillion-dollar vacation home his family rents in the Kailua Beach area, near Honolulu. He skipped his standard early morning gym workout and headed to the golf course later Saturday.
The Obamas were to spend Christmas Eve at home with a close circle of family and friends that typically joins the president for his annual Hawaiian vacation. They include Obama's sister, Maya Soetoro-Ng, who lives in the state with her family, and several friends the president has known since high school.
The president's annual December trip to the state where he was born and mostly raised almost didn't happen. He had planned to arrive in Hawaii on Dec. 17, but delayed his departure while Congress worked its way through a stalemate over extending payroll tax cuts.
A deal was finalized Friday morning. Hours later, the president boarded Air Force One for Hawaii to meet his wife and daughters, who traveled ahead of him.
Obama's first order of business when he arrived was taking his wife out to dinner. The couple joined a few friends at Morimoto restaurant, one of their favorite dining spots on the island of Oahu.
The president has no public events planned in Hawaii. A small group of advisers accompanied him to brief him on domestic and international developments.
The Obamas are expected to return to Washington shortly after New Year's Day.

Leigh Steinberg, seen in this 2006 photo at the Pro Football Hall of Fame, faces a bench warrant after failing to appear in court.
Mark Duncan/AP
SANTA ANA, Calif. (AP) -- "Show me the money" indeed: A bench warrant has been authorized for the sports agent who was the inspiration for the movie "Jerry Maguire" after he failed to appear in court in a case involving a $1.4 million debt.
An Orange County Superior Court commissioner authorized the warrant after Leigh Steinberg failed to attend court last week, court records show.
Court papers show Steinberg was ordered to pay $1.4 million last year to the Irvine Company in a default judgment for office space he leased in Newport Beach. Steinberg stopped paying under the terms of his lease in 2009, according to court papers filed by the landlord, which declined to comment on the case.
Steinberg was the inspiration for Tom Cruise's character in 1996's "Jerry Maguire," which turned "Show me the money!" into an enduring catchphrase, though Steinberg isn't actually known for using that phrase.
Steinberg said he's not hiding or running from the law. He said he has an office open for business in Irvine and thousands of friends on Facebook and followers on Twitter.
The 62-year-old agent said he's still representing athletes and acting as a consultant on projects related to sports in movies, television and video games.
Steinberg said he had asked his attorney to change the date of his Dec. 15 hearing and was told it was taken care of. Steinberg said he was unaware of any warrant in the case, which stems from some payments he missed in 2009 before moving to less expensive office space.
"Since when in this country do you put people in jail for having debt?" he said in a phone interview Thursday. "The point is, I had some financial struggles, which I regret. And I am working hard right now to pay the debts I owe."
The warrant was authorized by Superior Court Commissioner Jane D. Myers. The court would need to receive instructions and fees from the plaintiff, the Irvine Company, for the warrant to become effective.
Steinberg said his financial troubles stem in part from his divorce in 2008. He separated from his wife in 2006.
During the divorce proceedings, Steinberg told the court he had suffered "significant business reversals and losses" that had prompted the couple to refinance the family home, according to papers filed in family court in Orange County.
Since that time, Steinberg has also been sued over allegedly unpaid bills owed to a bank, credit card company, apartment complex and dentist, court records show.
Those amounts were far smaller than the Irvine Company case, including a $6,754 bill from a dentist, the records show.
Earlier this month, the Irvine Company asked the court to require Steinberg to apply a portion of his income stream to pay the judgment, alleging process servers have been unable to directly contact him.
"Steinberg is a semi famous figure with huge apparent notoriety but shows signs of significant recent deterioration," Brooke Brandt, an attorney for the Orange County real estate company, wrote in a Dec. 9 court filing. "He appears to have a phalanx of security protection around him that prevents process servers from gaining access to him unless he allows it."
The next hearing in the case is scheduled for Feb. 6.
Steinberg is considered the first super agent in sports, having represented such NFL stars as Troy Aikman, Steve Young, Warren Moon and Ben Roethlisberger, as well as boxer Oscar De La Hoya. His resume includes representing eight No. 1 overall NFL draft picks. He began his career in 1975 and was able to secure huge signing bonuses for some of football's biggest stars.

NEW YORK GIANTS (7-7) AT NEW YORK JETS (8-6)
1 p.m. Today
GIANTS: QB Eli Manning (4,362 yards) has carried his team, but he sputtered last week throwing three INTs. He will have a tough task against the Jets? seventh-ranked pass defense. ? Tom Coughlin?s team is averaging less than four yards per carry, but RBs Ahmad Bradshaw and Brandon Jacobs have improved that to 5.2 ypc. the last two weeks and should gash the Jets? 16th-ranked run D. ? Look for TE Jake Ballard (604 yards, four TDs) to expose a soft middle and open the outside for WRs Victor Cruz and Hakeem Nicks. ? DE Jason Pierre-Paul has 13.5 sacks, fourth overall.
JETS: The key for QB Mark Sanchez is staying upright. He has been sacked seven times the last two weeks and has been sacked three or more times in six games this season. ? RT Wayne Hunter has been suspect and will be asked to block Pierre-Paul, the Giants best pass rusher. ? To keep the Giants rush at bay, RB Shonn Greene needs daylight. He has rushed for 941 yards this season and six scores. ? WRs Plaxico Burress and Santonio Holmes have been hit or miss at best, but they should be able to take advantage of CB Prince Amukamara and the Giants 29th-ranked pass D.
THE PICK: This is not only the battle of Gotham, it?s a scrum featuring a pair of unpredictable teams. In these match-ups, we go with the best player on the field at impact positions and that?s Manning and Pierre-Paul. Giants win. New York Giants (+3) 23, New York Jets 17.
SAN DIEGO (7-7) AT DETROIT (9-5)
1 p.m. Today
CHARGERS: The Chargers are surging, and QB Philip Rivers has seven TDs to zero picks in three straight wins. ? RB Ryan Mathews has haken off his first-year blues to rush for 1,033 yards. He has ripped off 453 of those yards the last four games and will face a Lions defense that gives up 135.8 ypg. ? WR Vincent Jackson runs hot and cold, but he has 1,036 yards. WR Malcolm Floyd is back and averaging 21.1 ypc. They should test the Lions secondary. ? LB Takeo Spikes has 94 tackles for a defense that has held opponents to a total of 38 points in three weeks.
LIONS: QB Matthew Stafford tossed two TDs in the last five minutes to help the Lions sneak out a win in Oakland and has thrown 33 of his 52 career TDs this season. ? WR Calvin Johnson will be the focal point of the Chargers sixth-ranked pass defense. He has 81 catches for 1,335 yards and 14 scores. ? The Chargers allow 126.1 ypg. on the ground and could see plenty of RB Kevin Smith, who is averaging 5.7 ypc. in five games. ? DE Cliff Avril leads the team in sacks with 11 and needs to aid DT Ndamukong Suh and DE Kyle Vanden Bosch in putting pressure on Rivers.
THE PICK: Rivers might have done enough in recent weeks to save HC Norv Turner?s job, but this trip to the Motor City won?t be a holiday. The Lions play inspired on the verge of clinching their first playoff spot since 1999. Detroit (-2.5) 30, San Diego 21.
PHILADELPHIA (6-8) AT DALLAS (8-6)
4:15 p.m. Today
EAGLES: If HC Andy Reid hands RB LeSean McCoy the rock, the Eagles have a chance to win. McCoy set the franchise record for TDs (20) last week and has rushed for 1,274 yards. He torched Dallas for 185 in Week 8. ? QB Michael Vick tied a career high in INTs with 13 and has thrown a pick in four straight games. ? WRs DeSean Jackson and Jeremy Maclin have opened holes for TE Brent Celek in the passing game. Celek had 156 yards receiving last week and should be a factor against a Cowboys LB corps that struggles in pass coverage. ? DE Jason Babin leads the NFL with 18 sacks.
COWBOYS: QB Tony Romo isn?t to blame for recent team failures. He has eight TDs to zero picks the last three games and has passed for 3,895 yards, 29 TDs and only nine INTs this season. ? RB Felix Jones has 214 yards the last two weeks in relief of injured RB DeMarco Murray. He should find lanes against the Eagles 17th-ranked rush defense. ? WRs Miles Austin and WR Laurent Robinson should be factors with Eagles CB Asante Samuel (hamstring) out. TE Jason Witten can also expose a young Eagles LB corps. ? DeMarcus Ware (16 sacks) has to pressure Vick for the Cowboys to have a chance.
THE PICK: Both teams have struggled in big games, but the Eagles look like they have found their stride and new life. Rob Ryan?s battered and bruised defense doesn?t match up with the Eagles? playmakers, giving Jerry Jones every reason to worry. Philadelphia (+2) 28, Dallas 24.
ATLANTA (9-5) AT NEW ORLEANS (11-3)
8:30 p.m. Monday
FALCONS: The offense is clicking behind QB Matt Ryan, who has thrown 12 TDs to two INTs the last five games. The Falcons are 4-1 in the stretch. ? Beating the Saints requires running the ball. RB Michael Turner fit?s the bill with 1,129 yards this season, but he is nursing a groin injury. ? WR Roddy White is sure to be active against the Saints? 28th-ranked pass defense. White?s had 120 yards in three of the last five games and averages 112.8 yards and has three scores in last four games against the Saints. ? HC Mike Smith hopes to have CBs Kelvin Hayden (toe) and Brent Grimes (knee) back in the lineup.
SAINTS: It?s all about QB Drew Brees, who needs 305 yards to break Dan Marino?s 1984 mark of 5,084 yards. He is a solid bet against the Falcons 17th-ranked pass defense. ? RB Darren Sproles has been a free-agent steal. He has 1,155 all-purpose yards and seven scores. ? Brees has a bevy of receivers, but none has been bigger than TE Jimmy Graham. He has 87 catches, 1,171 yards and nine scores this season. ? DC Gregg Williams? unit gives up 366.1 ypg. (25th overall) but has not allowed more than 24 points in the Saints? six-game winning streak.
THE PICK: The Falcons have to win one of their last two games to clinch a spot in the playoffs, but it will have to wait a week. Brees is the maestro of the league?s top offense and has 20 touchdowns in the Superdome where the Saints don?t lose. New Orleans (-7) 42, Atlanta 28.

CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) ? Venezuela's top prosecutor said Thursday that she doesn't think Colombia has provided a proper request for the extradition of a Colombian rebel commander who was captured in Venezuela.
Attorney General Luisa Ortega said she has provided her opinion to the Supreme Court, which will decide on Colombia's extradition request.
Guillermo Torres Cueter, better known by the alias "Julian Conrado," was captured in southwestern Venezuela in May, and the authorities say he is a commander of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC.
Ortega told state television that the accusations Colombia cited in its extradition request were "different from the crimes on which he is wanted."
Colombian officials did not immediately react to Ortega's announcement.
The authorities have described Torres as the most senior FARC commander captured since 2004 in Venezuela.
He is wanted by Colombian authorities on charges of homicide, kidnapping and rebellion.
The U.S. government had also offered a $2.5 million reward for information leading to Torres' capture. The U.S. State Department said he participated in directing the FARC's production and distribution of cocaine bound for the United States and other countries.
Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez said in June that Torres' capture indicated that cooperation between Venezuela and neighboring Colombia was producing positive results. Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos also praised Torres' capture, which was carried out by Venezuelan authorities with help from Colombian officials.
Chavez has not recently expressed an opinion on Torres' fate.
Venezuela's Communist Party, which is allied with Chavez's government, presented a request for political asylum on Torres' behalf in August. The party called his capture illegal, saying he had been working as a farmer in Venezuela and wasn't armed.
Communist Party leader Pedro Eusse said at the time that Torres expressed fears he could be tortured or killed if sent back to Colombia. Eusse also said Torres' had a problem with his prostate and that his health troubles should weigh in favor of the asylum request.
Ortega said officials were checking on Torres' health.
Yul Jabour, another leading member of the Communist Party, praised the attorney general's decision on Thursday and said the party now hopes the authorities will rule on the asylum request.

Ventre: 2011 was one big surprise party in sports. There were enough astounding developments ? both positive and negative ? to keep mouths agape, eyes agog and Twitter atwitter. Unfortunately, the one that stands out the most is the ugliest story possible.

One of Windows 8's biggest new features, the ability to use a photo as a touch-based authentication method for login, has been described as a "Fisher-Price toy" by the creator of the RSA SecureID two-factor authentication token.
Speaking to IT World, Kenneth Weiss, formerly of RSA and now the head of a three-factor authentication firm called Universal Secure Registry, is scathing of Microsoft's touch-centric login system, which asks users to press key points in a photograph in a particular order to log in to a device.
"I think it's cute. I don't think it's serious security," Weiss explains. "It's more like a Fisher-Price toy than a serious choice for secure computer access."
Weiss's concerns are somewhat allayed by Microsoft's positioning of the picture-based login system as an alternative, rather than a replacement, to the traditional password-based method, with a focus on touch-screen portable devices like tablets and smartphones where speed of access is a concern.
With Windows 8 targeting tablets in a big way, via the new touch-centric Metro UI design and its focus on web-powered apps, the photo unlock method is a neat feature - but, as Weiss points out, may be a poor choice from a security perspective.
