ROW Adventures nets magazine's top spot : North Idaho Business ...

By ALECIA WARREN/Staff writer

June Cavette secures her life jacket before heading out on a sunset kayak tour of Fernan Lake with Dave Colston.

At a glance, ROW Adventures? website certainly suggests an expansive operation.

Click into it more, and it starts to get overwhelming.

The guide company?s destinations are categorized according to continent. A photo slideshow shows folks splashing in turquoise waves on a Jamaican bay, and kayakers coasting across icy Alaskan waters.

Activities are listed as land based, water based, or, curiously, ?other,? including items like an ?Epicurean voyage by yacht and on foot? in Croatia, and a ?beer trip on the Rogue River? in Oregon.

Yeah, it?s a little intriguing.

And according to the Coeur d?Alene-based company?s clients, of which there are roughly 4,000 each year, ROW Adventures is world class.

A recent reader survey by Travel and Leisure Magazine identified ROW Adventures as the No. 1 tour operator in the world, based on criteria like quality of guides, itineraries, activities, food.

The title is one that founder Peter Grubb hopes will boost the company to even farther reaching renown.

?It?s nice to be in business for 33 years and see some recognition,? said Grubb, a Coeur d?Alene resident. ?It puts us into a league of very high quality travel companies.?

The 55-year-old outdoorsman lauds the multi-networked machine into which the company has evolved. Tour guides are hired around the world, with activities and locations based on requests from restless vacationers, pitches from guides and ideas that Grubb has conceived in his travels across roughly 35 countries.

?You have to have to keep being creative,? he said of maintaining a global guide business. ?One of the keys, especially to stay in front of the press and media, is you have to keep coming up with new things.?

He seems to be doing well with that.

The company offers itineraries in 17 countries across five continents, as well in as the four-state block of Idaho, Montana, Washington and Oregon.

Adventures include culinary-whitewater rafting tours, Kosher rafting trips that follow Jewish customs and diet, a journey by camel and 4-by-4 across the Sahara, and a River Soul trip that combines rafting with yoga and journaling.

Multisport trips allow clients to kayak, snorkel, hike and mountain bike in locations around the world.

?There?s a story behind every trip that we do,? said Grubb, a California native. ?Somewhere we went and fell in love, and we want to share that with other people.?

Exotic locations are all well and good, but it?s the company?s attention to detail that has kept Chuck Anderson returning to ROW for more than 25 rafting trips here in the U.S., he said.

?Once you?ve done it once, then you?ll be hooked,? said Anderson, a Coeur d?Alene resident.

He described multi-day trips where he would climb out of the raft to find tents and gear already set up, hors d?oeuvres waiting.

Staff ensured children were entertained while the adults relaxed, Anderson added. In the mornings, guests were greeted with coffee at their tents.

?It?s definitely done with style,? he said. ?I think they?re the best company I?ve had the opportunity to go on trips with.?

ROW?s outdoor diversions have been valuable to the area?s development into a tourist destination, said Steve Wilson, CEO of the Coeur d?Alene Chamber of Commerce.

?Outdoor adventure, particularly soft adventure, is extremely important for the development of a destination, particularly a destination that has a lot of family activity oriented things to see and do,? Wilson said.

Such a sprawling operation can be a headache, admitted Grubb, especially managing 10 year-round staff, 70 seasonal and still more freelance guides oceans away.

There have also been snags like tsunamis or volcanoes disrupting travel plans.

The key, Grubb said, is to ?take a deep breath? and listen to all perspectives.

?Sometimes it?s great,? he said. ?People most of the time are in a good mood, talking about their vacations, not talking about insurance or other more mundane things of life. So from that standpoint it?s very nice, as long as we deliver on our promises.?

Getting there was an adventure few could have guided.

Grubb, who had already worked as a rafting guide as a young man, started River Odysseys West as a partnership with his brother in 1979.

Perhaps evidence it was the right move, Grubb needed an 11-day backpacking trip in the Sierra Nevada to decide if he should pursue the venture.

The first year saw 13 people taken out rafting in raw Oregon rivers.

But business grew as Grubb marketed the company across the West Coast, giving hundreds of presentations to organizations as he puttered from spot to spot in his station wagon.

?I was young and naive, had a strong passion for sharing rivers with people,? he recalled. ?Frankly, the thought of failing never crossed my mind.?

The company?s first international guide trip was on his own honeymoon, with several

see ROW, AA7

from AA6

guests sharing a yachting trip in Turkey and Greece with Grubb and his wife, ROW guide Betsy Bowen.

It was a trip the newlyweds couldn?t afford on their own, Grubb said.

?When (the clients) left, we spent another two or three weeks in Europe,? he said. ?It wasn?t like the whole honeymoon was with eight other people.?

Afterward, the company started offering tours in the Mediterranean every year. Eventually ROW became Remote Odysseys Worldwide, and the company delved further into foreign lands, like Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands.

Grubb?s unwavering aim is to immerse tourists into the culture of locations they visit, he said, unlike harried, landmark-hopping tours that he scorns.

?We?re not gawking and superficially visiting a place. We don?t do Europe in 10 days,? he said. ?We go to one very small part of any given country, and we see that very well.?

The company will continue its evolution, he said.

Immediately, in fact. This year will mark the company?s first guided trip to Montenegro, Kosovo and Albania.

?Those three names probably send chills down people?s backs, but it?s something we?ve been looking at for a couple years,? Grubb said. ?It?s supporting small, rural villages trying to develop a new form of economic tourism.?

For local adventurers who want to be home in time for dinner, they can always just rely on ROW for a kayak trip on Lake Fernan, too.

That?s the beauty of ROW, Grubb said. It offers any adventure people seek.

?We don?t plan to rest on our laurels. We want to keep getting better,? Grubb said. ?There?s always room for improvement, and we always listen to our guests.?

Subscriber data from Internet service providers

Companies that provide Internet access services have begun releasing their earnings reports for the latest quarter. There are subscriber figures and other data from selected Internet service providers:

? July 19: Verizon Communications Inc. gained just 2,000 broadband customers in the latest quarter ? the worst result in four years. Verizon says the weak showing was in part due to Verizon ending the sale of DSL connections to people who don't have a landline phone account. The effort is part of an attempt to improve profitability. Verizon has upgraded part of its phone network with optical fiber, a service it sells as FiOS. It has raised prices, also to improve profitability, resulting in fewer new FiOS subscribers ? 134,000 during the quarter, to end with 5.1 million.

? July 24: AT&T Inc. says it gained 553,000 U-verse Internet customers to end the quarter with 6.5 million. That helped offset losses in customers who get DSL, a slower and older technology.

? July 25: AOL Inc. says it had 3 million access subscribers as of June 30, down 84,000 during the quarter.

Coming up:

? Tuesday: Frontier Communications Corp.

? Wednesday: Comcast Corp.

? Thursday: Time Warner Cable Inc.

? Aug. 7: Charter Communications Inc., Cablevision Systems Corp.

? Aug. 8: CenturyLink Inc.

? Aug. 9: Windstream Corp.

Sussex County a leader in digital communication - All VoIP News

NEWTON ? Sussex County's use of information and communications research has been ranked first among all counties in the nation its size, according to a voluntary survey released by the National Association of Counties.

Each annual survey shows the direction digital innovation has taken across the country and, according to officials, "2011 left little doubt operational efficiency is guiding decisions in Sussex and county innovation offices everywhere."

Larry E. Naake, the national association's executive director, said the Digital Counties Survey, "identified best practices and innovative uses of innovation crucial with today's constrained budgets to maintaining and even improving service levels."

The county moved to the top of its size classification because of its development of server and desktop virtualization and creation of a private cloud computing model, which can be used by any other municipality in the county.

With the network combining its resources into a pool, available resources can be split into independent networks and each private network can be assigned to a particular government's requirements.

The county's entire network has been replaced with the private cloud allowing the county to share resources, improve research services and reducing the overall cost of the system.

Microsoft details the Touch Mouse's upcoming support for Windows 8 gestures

We already knew that Microsoft would be upgrading its Touch Mouse to support Windows 8 gestures, but the outfit never confirmed which finger movements, exactly, would be built in. Now, Redmond is explaining it all, even though the mouse won't actually get updated until Win8 goes on sale in late October. According to the company, you'll be able to swipe two fingers to the right to toggle between open programs, and two to the left to expose those Charms. Sliding three fingers up and down will allow you to use Semantic Zoom. (Naturally, you'll be able to swipe from side to side to move through the tiles on your Start screen, but you probably already guessed that.) We have a Touch Mouse here at Engadget HQ that we're just itching to update, but until those drivers drop three months from now, it seems we'll just have to find something else to keep us entertained.

Three Simple Steps Obama Can Take on Gun Control

In a speech to the Urban League in New Orleans on Wednesday, President Obama decried daily urban gun violence?equal in toll, he said, to an Aurora, Colo., mass shooting every day?but he glossed over what gun-control advocates say is his own record of failing to use existing executive power to tighten access to the deadliest firearms.

?There?s talk of new reforms, and there?s talk of new legislation,? Obama told the Urban League, setting the table for a ?don?t-blame-me-blame-Congress? explanation for policy drift. ?And, too often, those efforts are defeated by politics and by lobbying and eventually by the pull of our collective attention elsewhere.?

Gun-control proponents and dozens of congressional Democrats vehemently disagree. Although Obama can?t take action that would have prevented the Batman movie shootings, the president has all the power he needs right now?as well as a precedent set by a Republican predecessor?to crack down on some assault-weapon sales. And Obama, despite three years of pleas from these Democrats, is not using it.

The president could make three moves:

1. Allow law-enforcement agencies to confiscate more assault weapons like the AR-15 rifle used in the Aurora shootings by reinstituting a tighter definition of ?sporting purposes? when inspecting assault weapons for import. President George H.W. Bush did this in 1989 to ban the import of assault weapons, using powers under the Gun Control Act of 1968, which stipulated that legal rifles had to be ?suitable for sporting purposes.? Bush acted after a serial criminal killed five schoolchildren and wounded 29 others with an AK-47 assault rifle on Jan. 27, 1989, in Stockton, Calif.

President Clinton expanded that action with a second executive order in 1998 banning firearm imports and ammunition from China. The elder Bush watched his son, President George W. Bush, preside over the persistent watering down of the ?sporting purposes? filter to block assault-weapons imports?a policy Obama has perpetuated. Fifty-three members of Congress wrote Obama on Feb. 12, 2009, urging him to tighten the ban on assault-weapon imports. Obama has ignored such requests.

?This continues to be a problem,? said Dennis Henigan, vice president for law and policy at the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence. ?Something happened under the second Bush administration, and that has essentially continued under Obama.?

2. Expand Obama?s new requirement issued by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives that gun shops in border states report customers who purchase two or more domestically made assault weapons within five business days. The courts have upheld the reporting requirement, and it could be expanded nationwide without congressional action. Gun-control advocates credit Obama for taking the initial step on tracking multiple sales in border states (where Mexican cartel violence has risen), but a national system could help make multiple assault-weapon purchases more visible and traceable.

3. Toughen licensing requirements on gun dealers to secure their inventories. Advocates say that Obama could easily take three basic steps: Require dealers to better secure firearms from possible theft, mandate background checks of gun-shop employees, and eliminate the ?fire sale? loophole that allows gun dealers who have had their licenses revoked to sell off their inventory without compulsory background checks on those sales. Rep. Gary Ackerman, D-N.Y., has written to Obama asking for this administrative-enforcement change. Obama already has used some executive power to expand the reach of criminal background checks for firearm purchases, which he touted in New Orleans, calling them ?more thorough and complete.?

The National Rifle Association declined to comment on the use of presidential authority on gun control or on whether the organization would object to the exercise of any of the executive powers that advocates say Obama has but doesn?t use. In these specific and untapped areas of executive clout and gun control, the record is clear: Democrats have complained about the president?s inaction, while the NRA, given the opportunity to complain, has said nothing.

Moreover, Obama has proven again and again in an election year that he can find executive means to sidestep Congress. He did so on the so-called Dream Act by ordering an end to arrests of young immigrants brought to America illegally by their parents and granting two-year permits to those already in deportation proceedings. Obama has also heeded calls from GOP governors to waive certain work requirements under the 1996 welfare-reform law, even though some congressional Republicans accuse him of ?gutting? the law?s goal of moving people from welfare to work. The president has also used executive power to lift the insurance mandate for those who qualify for expanded Medicaid coverage under his new health care law but live in states where the governor won?t accept expanded federal Medicaid financing.

Obama is no stranger to dipping deep into the murky waters of executive powers and finding ways to achieve policy goals that Congress has thwarted. Proponents of gun control say that the president has crystal clear and uncontested powers?some used by an NRA card-carrying GOP president (Bush resigned from the group in 1995)?to deal with assault weapons.

Yet the White House remains stonily silent on Obama?s intentions even to reevaluate whether to exercise these powers. In the Big Easy, he made it sound as if gun control is always hard. It most definitely can be. But there are actions Obama can easily take, and what?s hard for Democrats and gun-control advocates to figure out is why he won?t.?

THE BIG PARADE

AP in-house Olympics poet Fred Lief tries his hand at recapping the march of nations at Friday's opening ceremony:

___

The Greeks go first and they're put to good use

In saluting the games ? or is it Zeus?

The athletes march. They cavort and they shriek

From the Cayman Islands to Mozambique,

Country by country, border to border

All in neat alphabetical order.

Australians mug for the cameras and dance.

Look: There's Tony Parker, walking with France.

The guy from Fiji is wearing no shirt.

Check out San Marino: high heels, short skirt.

In one strong statement for fashion and sports

Comes Bermuda's team in Bermuda shorts.

That blazing sky is no supernova

But Russia's flag-bearer, Sharapova.

Onward they march. Can there be many more?

Hey, they're still only up to Singapore

And just when this slog is getting real old

The Brits take the stage decked in white and gold.

Then the night closes and the games begin,

Quoting Sir Paul: Let it out, let it in.

How to Be an Adult in Relationships: The Five Keys to Mindful ...

A comment from Steve Nakamoto ? One of the key ingredients to a successful relationship is emotional maturity. It is required in order to handle the inevitable ups and downs that eventually occur in every relationship. While romantic chemistry holds the other key to making a romantic love relationship, emotional maturity is equally important over time. This book addresses the latter.

**********

?Most people think of love as a feeling,? says David Richo, ?but love is not so much a feeling as a way of being present.? In this book, Richo offers a fresh perspective on love and relationships?one that focuses not on finding an ideal mate, but on becoming a more loving and realistic person. Drawing on the Buddhist concept of mindfulness, How to Be an Adult in Relationships explores five hallmarks of mindful loving and how they play a key role in our relationships throughout life:

1.? Attention to the present moment; observing, listening, and noticing all the feelings at play in our relationships.
2.? Acceptance of ourselves and others just as we are.
3.? Appreciation of all our gifts, our limits, our longings, and our poignant human predicament.
4.? Affection shown through holding and touching in respectful ways.
5.? Allowing life and love to be just as they are, with all their ecstasy and ache, without trying to take control.

When deeply understood and applied, these five simple concepts?what Richo calls the five A?s?form the basis of mature love. They help us to move away from judgment, fear, and blame to a position of openness, compassion, and realism about life and relationships. By giving and receiving these five A?s, relationships become deeper and more meaningful, and they become a ground for personal transformation.

In Singapore, there are many who understand body art, like tattoos and piercing, however it is not easy to find a professional tattoo or piercing store.

Although there are not much tattoo artist store in Singapore, however there are only a few which are the experienced ones. A good tattoo artist has his own creative mind, precise tattoo equipment handling & many years in business. As such, we would like to introduce a tattoo artist shop, Ink By Finch, by the owner of Joe.

Not only that, a reputable tattoo artist does not cause as much irritation during the tattooing process as compared to an beginner. However there are some steps on your part that could help in reducing the pain during the tattooing process. First of all, increase your water intake a few days before your tattoo appointment. Also refrain from drugs or any other medication before and on the actual day of your appointment. Not to forget, please have enough sleep the night before your tattoo process! Tools that are used by tattoo artist have to be sterilize after every use in order to avoid the spread of AIDS/HIV.

You might have heard of colleagues touch up their tattoo with another design or that they want to have their tattoo removed just because the tattoo didn?t turn out as what they wanted. Challenging our own ideas of home and family - Dating for Parents ...

I had sold it to my children as an adventure, a yearlong journey that would yank them out of their comfortable suburban home in St. Louis County into the heart of student living in an iconic college town.

With repeated assurances that we would return to their real home, back with their real friends, they were cautiously on board with our move to Ann Arbor, Mich.

I vacillated between euphoria and panic.

I had received a fellowship to study a topic I was personally invested in: how technology is changing family life in the digital age. And, I had a supportive enough spouse and employer to let me pursue the opportunity. The big picture looked like a dream come true. It was the details that provoked serious apprehension. My husband would be staying behind in our home in St. Louis and continue working at his job here, while commuting to Michigan as much as possible. In our 12-year marriage, we had never spent more than a few days apart at a time.

I would have to adjust to becoming a part-time single parent and full-time student in an unfamiliar place with no one I really knew. And when we walked into our apartment in graduate family housing last fall, I realized we most certainly weren?t in St. Louis anymore, Toto.

Our glorified dorm had cinderblock walls, gritty wood floors and a kitchen the size of a walk-in pantry without a dishwasher or microwave. All of us would be sharing a single bathroom in which less than one child-size step separated the sink from the toilet with the bathtub an arm?s length away.

We furnished the place in true collegiate fashion, equal parts Target and Goodwill. I bought a pair of pink dishwashing gloves and lots of paper plates and bowls. We pared down kitchen and clothing essentials and then cut that down by half.

The stuff we would manage just fine without. It was the days of parenting on my own that were so much harder.

By the time my husband would arrive on weekends, I?d be tired from running to classes and seminars, keeping the kids on schedule in school and in their activities and cooking and cleaning our relatively tiny space. Plus, I was on a sabbatical, with relatively few work responsibilities other than the ones I imposed upon myself. But there is a smaller margin for error when there isn?t backup to pick up last-minute items from the store for a school project or drop-off at school rehearsals. There?s an intricate dance with baby-sitters, 2 a.m. emails to teachers and far less patience at the end of the day. At the same time, our world became tighter, smaller, more intimately connected. And that was more rewarding than I could have imagined.

Too often, we imagine that most families look similar to the ones in our neighborhoods, resembling the friends in our social circles. When, in fact,?nearly 30 percent?of children in America?are raised by a single parent, according to the most recent Census data. Global reports indicate that this percentage is higher than other Western countries.

In the St. Louis metro area, that figure is even higher yet, with 32 percent of children being raised by single parents.

Families with a husband and wife?living with their own children under the age of 18 represent about 20 percent of households here, Census data shows.

Think about that for a moment. The most traditional vision of family, the configuration thought of most immediately when talking about family, is a minority among households. Yet this view of family and a home with a lawn and two-car garage colors the most important debates we have about parenting, education and children. When I?ve written columns in the past about the challenges of nursing or baby sleep or school field trips, I?ve had my default bias set on two-parent households. When we hear politicians argue over the value of early child-care programs or the state?s minimum wage,?how often do we?imagine an?inclusive picture of families affected by these decisions?

In the past year, I had the chance to read more than I ever could have done while working full-time. I took classes I never would have considered when I was in college or graduate school, such as how video games can be used in learning. I traveled to five countries, from South America to the Middle East. I met Supreme Court justices in Argentina and political prisoners in the occupied territories of the West Bank. But I gained just as much perspective from stepping outside my established notion of family and what makes a home.

I?ll be sharing my research on how our ideas of privacy and technology and family life are colliding and shifting in this modern age. But I?ll also be telling more stories about families outside our?20 percent.

I?m looking forward to restarting our weekly conversations, St. Louis.

As always, it will be an adventure.

London 2012: The Official Video Game of the Olympic Games

The London 2012 Summer Olympics will captivate the world in a matter of days, but the official video game tie-in is already here, courtesy of Sega. The lengthily named London 2012: The Official Video Game of the Olympic Games ?puts players in the position to experience the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat in over 30 world-class competitions. London 2012 manages to capture the games' spirit with its collection of mini-games, but the lack of real-world athletes and a few ho-hum events keep it from bringing home the gold.

Olympic Tech

On Your Mark?
London 2012 features 36 nations competing for Olympic gold in such varied competitions as the 100 meter dash, archery, skeet shooting, table tennis, and weightlifting. When you select a nation to represent, London 2012 displays relevant background information such as the country's first year of Olympic participation, total number of medals won since, and the sports in which it excels. I selected team USA which excels at athletic, swimming, diving, and wrestling.

Unfortunately, London 2012 lacks real-world athlete names (like Usain Bolt), so players spoiled by FIFA Soccer 12 ($59.99, 4 stars) and Madden NFL 12's ?($39.99, 4 stars) painstaking player recreations won't feel like they are playing a true Olympic game. That said, you can edit characters' names and appearances, so if you're diligent and have the time, you can recreate your favorite athletes.

Get Set?
Each in-game day you can choose to participate in a handful of events. You can opt to play a tutorial before each event to get the flow of the mechanics, or dive straight in?the latter isn't recommended. London 2012 focuses on rhythm and precision, not button-mashing, so if you leap into the game with a button on rapid-fire, you won't medal. This is exemplified in the racing events where you tap a button to fill a momentum meter. Keep it in the green and your sprinter runs at a fast, steady pace; have the meter go red by pressing the button too rapidly and she or he will burnout. Swimming works in a similar time-based fashion but you use analog sticks instead of buttons. It's truly a refreshing change of pace.

That said, some of the simplified controls lack a certain pizzazz. The gymnastic events are quick-time events, which essentially sees you tapping buttons in time with their on-screen appearances. Some will appreciate the simplified controls, but I found them a bit too simple. London 2012 also supports the Kinect and PlayStation Move motion peripherals. I played the game using Kinect (it supports a dozen events), and found the controls hit or miss, depending on the event.

Sega includes multiple modes to keep gameplay fresh. Besides the single player, local multiplayer (up to 4 players), and online multiplayer modes (8 players) there's Event Play where you pick and play a group of sports in four-player competition, and Party Play that lets you play one-off events. You can also save these event "playlists" so you can load them up and continue playing at a later time.

The game has TV-style presentation, complete with instant replays and component announcers who pull you into the action. You'll enjoy watching London 2012's attractive character models that swim, run, and cycle in realistic fashion. That said, the characters have dead eyes and expressions that dip into the uncanny valley.

Go!
London 2012 is a solid title that manages to capture some of the competitive glory that is the Summer Olympics. It is, essentially, a collection of mini-games, so there isn't much connection between events even in career mode. The game excels in multiplayer modes?either online or local?as the computer competition ranges from pushover to tough-as-nails. If you're looking to live the Olympic thrill, London 2012 is a silver-medal game for the less athletically inclined.?

New Tonto, familiar feelings for Native Americans

(AP) ? Gyasi Ross grew up decades after the "Lone Ranger" aired on TV, but his friends would still call him "Tonto" when they teased him.

"Everybody understands who Tonto is, even if we hadn't seen the show, and we understood it wasn't a good thing," said Ross, a member of the Blackfeet Nation in Montana who lives and has family in the Suquamish Tribe, outside Seattle. "Why else would you tease someone with that?"

The making of a new "Lone Ranger" Disney movie, and the announcement that Johnny Depp is playing sidekick Tonto, have reawakened feelings about a character that has drawn much criticism over the years as being a Hollywood creation guilty of spreading stereotypes.

The film is still in production, but Indian Country has been abuzz about it for months, with many sharing opinions online and a national Native publication running an occasional series on the topic.

Some Native Americans welcome the new movie, which is slated for release next summer. Parts were filmed on the Navajo Nation with the tribe's support, and an Oklahoma tribe recently made Depp an honorary member.

But for others, the "Lone Ranger" represents a lingering sore spot ? one that goes back to the 1950s television version of Tonto, who spoke in broken English, wore buckskin and lacked any real cultural traits.

Depp's role attracted particular attention in April when producer Jerry Bruckheimer tweeted a picture of the actor in his Tonto costume. He had on black and white face paint, an intense gaze, a black bird attached to his head and plenty of decorative feathers.

"The moment it hit my Facebook newsfeed, the updates from my friends went nutso," wrote Natanya Ann Pulley, a doctorate student at University of Utah, in an essay for the online magazine McSweeney's.

For Pulley and her friends, the portrayal of Native Americans in Western movies is getting old.

"I'm worried about the Tonto figure becoming a parody or a commercialized figure that doesn't have any dimension or depth. Or consideration for contemporary context of Native Americans," she said.

But Native Americans are far from a monolithic group, and many are opening their arms to the new movie. Some are just excited to see Depp take the role.

In New Mexico, where some of the movie was filmed, the Navajo presented Depp, his co-star Armie Hammer, director Gore Verbinski and Bruckheimer with Pendleton blankets to welcome them to their land. Elsewhere, the Comanche people of Oklahoma made Depp, one of Hollywood's most bankable stars, an honorary member.

"In my niece's mind, I met Jack Sparrow," said Emerald Dahozy, spokeswoman for Navajo President Ben Shelly and a member of the Navajo group who met with Depp. "My personal view, I like him playing in a character which he can embody well."

Dahozy said the "Lone Ranger" production brought something more palpable to the reservation: money. The actors and the large crew lived on Navajo land, eating at local restaurants and staying in towns that rely heavily on tourism.

Disney representatives declined to comment, but Depp has said the film will be a "sort of rock 'n' roll version of the Lone Ranger" with his Tonto offering a different take from the 1950s show.

Cheyenne and Arapaho filmmaker Chris Eyre is willing to give the actor a chance.

"Based on Johnny Depp as an artist, and him going all the way and making this film happen, in my book (he) deserves some credit," Eyre told Indian Country Today for its occasional "Tonto Files" series. "He wants to change the view of Tonto, and he put his reputation and his career on the line."

The "Lone Ranger" began on the radio in the 1930s. Tonto was played by an actor of Irish descent, according to the Lone Ranger Fan Club.

The show rocketed in popularity and made a seamless transition to television, running on ABC from 1949 to 1957. In 2003, a TV reboot flopped. That version featured a First Peoples actor from Canada playing Tonto.

But the 1950s portrayal of Tonto by Jay Silverheels, a Canadian Mohawk First Nations member, is by far the most recognized.

He spoke in pidgin and was the loyal partner of the crime-fighting ranger, often bailing out the masked avenger from treacherous situations.

"Here hat. Me wash in stream. Dry in sun. Make whiter," Tonto says in an early episode setting up his relationship with the Lone Ranger. "Here gun to kill bad men."

That Tonto has been criticized as being generic and subordinate ? a character with no individuality and no life beyond helping the Lone Ranger.

Tex Holland, executive director of the 600-member Lone Ranger Fan Club, defended the portrayal.

"I felt the Indians had their own language and in doing so, anyone learning the language is going to speak it broken, whether the person is from Japan or Mexico," Holland said. "I did not look down on him. All of us thought that's the way the Indians at that time communicated with us. Did we speak Indian fluently? We'd speak it broken it too."

Holland and his fellow fans, however, were taken aback by Depp's new look.

"Yuck. I can't believe that he's wearing a crow on his head. And he's looking like some type of medicine man," Holland said. "Disney chose (Depp) for one thing: box office draw."

Reportedly costing more than $200 million, plus yet-to-be-added marketing costs, Disney's "Lone Ranger" is the type of film that can make or break a studio's summer. It's already been plagued with budget woes. The movie's release date in 2013 was recently pushed back a month.

Having Depp in the cast assures more eyeballs will be on the screen. Depp led the "Pirates of the Caribbean" franchise and anchored "Alice in Wonderland." Three of those movies surpassed the rare billion-dollar mark at the worldwide box office.

Back on Suquamish land, Ross, doesn't mind having Depp as Tonto. In fact, the 36-year-old said he would have been more troubled had a Native American taken the role, knowing its history.

But he's worried the movie, which certainly will attract a large audience, will cement a stereotype for years to come because Hollywood doesn't make many movies with Native American protagonists. The popular ones stick in people's minds.

The first "Lone Ranger" did that, as did "Dances with Wolves" decades later, said Ross, an attorney who also writes a column for Indian Country Today.

"I'm not sure how much redefining I'm going to expect, not sure how much of the movie will be something I can show my son," he said.

Elite Basketball Summer Camp, Bay Area

While some kids may go to one of the Elite Basketball Camps, every year, others may be making the decision to go for the very first time. If a child is not accustomed to partaking in this type of program, it is essential that they think throw whether or not it is a good idea. Many people start the decision making process by gathering a little bit of information on the internet. It is common to search Summer Camp Bay Area to see what options surface. It is likely that the programs will vary and involve everything from violins, journaling, and pottery to fishing, building fires, and living in the woods for a couple of weeks. Since each child has a different personality and varying interests the first step of the process is sorting through the information from the Summer Camp Bay Area. If they have his or her mind made up to attend one of the Elite Basketball Camps there are certain factors that they need to take into consideration. Things to think about after the Summer Camp Bay Area search include: goals and reasons for attending the program, the amount of time that they have to invest in the program, whether they want to attend alone or with a friend or sibling, and logistics.

Each camper may have different goals and reasons for attending one of the Elite Basketball Camps. Before choosing where to go the camper and his family must first hone in on what the purpose is. Some campers just want to improve their skills. Others have a goal of making a specific team the following year. Some people want to break into the sport for the very first time and they are at a beginner level. Regardless of why the idea is appealing, it is important to be clear about ones expectations. If a camper and his or her family does not have an idea of why they are looking into programs, they will have a hard time knowing which one is the best fit.

They need to be sure about the amount of time that they have to invest. A one-week session is not the same as a two-month training. The amount of time one is willing to dedicate is a big factor in the best choice. They also need to decide whether or not they are comfortable spending the night somewhere or if they prefer day training.

Whether they want to attend alone or with a friend or sibling, is something else to think about. It can be comforting to have someone partaking in the same activity, but it is also fun to make some new friends, be independent, and truly be able to focus on the reason that the child is there.

Lastly, the family needs to work out logistics like transportation to and from the sessions, payment, gear, registration, etc. these are the little details that need to be thought through throughout the entire process.

The Most Common Misconceptions People Have About Personal Injury Law

Unless you have been involved in a personal injury case, most likely everything you know about these types of cases is based on what you have seen on television or read in newspaper articles and the internet. The personal injury cases reported in the media tend to be the most sensationalized stories involving court judgments or settlements worth millions of dollars. While these stories are great at grabbing your attention, they often give the wrong impression of what occurs in the majority of personal injury cases.

One of the most important things a ?personal injury lawyer does when he or she agrees to represent a client in a personal injury case is calculate the amount of a settlement. Factors taken into consideration while assessing the appropriate settlement amount include the cost of the medical bills that already exist and the cost of medical expenses for treatment needed in the future. Medical expenses may include surgery, regular appointments with the doctor, physical rehabilitation, medical devices that need to be used, and prescription medication. If the client is suffering from a chronic condition or injury that will take months or years to treat, the Personal injury lawyer must accurately determine how much money is needed to cover all of those medical bills.

Other factors that need to be assessed while creating a proposed settlement amount are the costs of repairing or replacing damaged personal property. When a client is injured it can substantially affect his or her ability to work at full capacity or work at all. In those situations, loss of income and necessary living expenses need to be calculated. If the client has dealt with any physical or emotional distress as a result of the injuries, compensation for pain and suffering is included in the settlement as well.

In spite of what is heard in the news, most personal injury cases are settled for a modest amount of money. Once the personal injury lawyer has determined the amount of money needed to compensate the client, the lawyer representing the at-fault party is often willing to settle the case. The opposing lawyer knows that it is more beneficial to reach a settlement rather than incur the expense of litigating the case in court.

There are times when the lawyer representing the at-fault party doesn?t want to settle. If the opposing lawyer believes the requested settlement amount is too high, he or she would probably be willing to take their chances in court. If litigation is pursued, the personal injury lawyer representing the victim must fight for the maximum amount possible for damages. The opposing lawyer may be open to negotiating a settlement at a later date depending on how the court proceedings go.

Schedule an appointment with a personal injury lawyer today if you have been injured. An experienced personal injury lawyer will carefully evaluate your case and explain your legal options. You will find out the value of your case and the legal strategies that can help you get the compensation you are entitled to receive.

Do Not Rely on Free Travel Insurance Protection Offered by Credit Cards

Rajeev Shrivastava

Most credit companies do offer you ?Free travel insurance? or ? Flight insurance,? but have you ever wondered if they offer enough protection. Often most travelers don?t purchase international travel insurance, believing their credit card protects them from any losses during their travel overseas. However, it is often found that the so-called free travel insurance offered by credit cards don?t match up to the protection offered by a travel insurance company.

Credit cards advertise often that they offer travel insurance protection for:

  • Travel Delays
  • Trip Interruption
  • Trip Cancellation
  • Lost or Destroyed Baggage
  • Rental Cars
  • Accidental Death and Dismemberment
  • Emergency assistance and concierge services
  • Flight accident insurance

However, not all credit cards offer all the aforementioned travel benefits. Some credit card travel insurance policies may not cover lost items, such as loss of wallet, passport, or luggage, and certain type of medical conditions.? However, those that claim to offer these benefits often charge a higher annual fee than what you would otherwise pay for a basic travel insurance plan. Besides, you must charge all your traveling expenses to the credit card to be eligible to derive those travel benefits, and your overseas trip should not be more than 30 days long. Your credit card insurance might not cover you for cheap holidays.

  • Beware, read the fine print and complete details of the credit card travel insurance coverage and look out for limitations and exclusions.
  • Notice if there is any such wording as ?We will not pay for items left behind, forgotten, or misplaced.?
  • See whether there is any discrepancy between different parts of the same credit card insurance policy. There might be a generous claim limit in one part, with exclusions a few pages later.
  • Make sure your credit card travel insurance policy has the right coverage for the adventures you plan during your trip overseas.

Credit Card Travel Protection: Most Common Limitations

Gold credit card insurance is usually valid until three months and cannot be extended, unlike international health insurance policies. If you change your itinerary to extend the stay beyond a fixed period, your credit card travel insurance coverage would immediately cease.

  • Limited and low maximum coverage limit which is usually $10,000 or less
  • May only cover accidents and not sickness
  • May not cover emergency or medical evacuations
  • May not cover trip cancellation just for any reason, as only certain scenarios are covered, including accidental serious injury, natural disaster, airlines labor strike, travel provider goes on strike, sudden termination from job.

No credit card travel insurance will cover you if you tend to change your mind at the last minute and cancel your trip. If you still decide that credit card insurance is the best option for you, make sure you have read the fine print and are aware of the coverage and limitations to avoid being stranded in a foreign country!

The Advantages of Online Business Networking | Customer ...

Networking is a key aspect of business success. Obviously, an enterprise does not work with a vacuum, it has buyers and providers, each of which will be networking in your firm in a single form and another. As a logical extension of this, conventional or offline networking activities have long been utilized as a way of interacting with interesting and legitimate new connections. Perhaps they are potential customers, perhaps new suppliers, and in a sociable environment, perhaps new business partners. The human touch of these activities aids you to categorized individuals we want to contend with from the people we don?t. Provided these apparent variables in favour of conventional networking, why do business networking online sites exist and how can they be used to our gain?

Business networking internet sites, just like Global Business Networking, are relatively few and far between, specifically when compared to social networking websites. They do however have some important positive aspects when employed in a complimentary method to traditional networking. Here we list the key features of internet networking:

1. The main advantage internet business networking has over more traditional sorts of networking is the same advantage the internet has over tv or printed media. You opt for when you?re planning to network, where you?re going to network and with whom. With a traditional networking event, you are required to go at the time and place the organisers select. With internet networking you select when you?re going to network ? you only need a computer and net connection (plus a regular membership charge if the internet site(s) you participate in require fee membership rights). If you want to network at 3am, that?s your choice.

2. The 2nd benefit to internet?business networking is the capacity to network with people outside of your instantaneous geographical place. As economic systems have expanded over the decades, businesses have outsourced both potential clients and potential suppliers that are situated further away. In many cases, this can make private visits expensive and time-consuming due to air-fares, hotel expenses, expense tabs etc. Online networking perfectly deals with these complaints and lets you network with anyone around the globe. If you need to pay for cloth from China or raw materials from Africa a business networking internet site can help hook up you with potential suppliers and consumers.

3. The third edge is one of personal security and anonymity. Have you ever been to a networking event and thought that creep in the brown suit would leave you alone? Or you?re concerned with issuing out your contact info to a number of other people? A great business networking website will ensure your personal data is secret whilst still permitting potential contacts to communicate with you (usually through the site rather than direct).

There is no avoiding from the fact that online business networking overlooks the personal human feelings really required to adequately analyze an individual. To attempt to circumvent this shortfall many sites have, a conversation on IM (Instant Messenger) area of the site. This can permit site users to accomplish a specific degree of know-how about one another which is more detailed than simple email messages or faxes. Nevertheless, they still do not substitute contact with others, and this is among the critical factors online business networking should be applied to conjunction with conventional networking methods.
