Pope Francis: Humble leader who takes bus to work

NBC News Special Report: The Vatican crowd cheers as Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio of Argentina is blessed and elevated to Pope Francis I, successor to Pope Benedict XVI, on the balcony of St. Peter's Basilica.

By Erin McClam, Staff Writer, NBC News

Pope Francis, the first man in the modern era from outside Europe to lead the Roman Catholic Church, prizes compassion, humility and simplicity ? so much that he gave up his chauffeur in Argentina and took the bus to work.

He is the first pope to be a member of the Society of Jesus, a Catholic order founded in the 16th century by St. Ignatius Loyola. Its? members, known as Jesuits, take a vow of poverty and are known for their work among the poor and their scholarship.

?A man who calmly stands for what?s right and just,? Cardinal Edward Egan, the archibishop emeritus of New York, told NBC News. ?A man of great compassion for the poor. That is what they point to first and foremost.?

During an economic crisis that gripped his home country over the last decade, Francis, then Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergolio, asserted himself as a champion of the least fortunate and a defender of social justice.

?We live in the most unequal part of the world, which has grown the most yet reduced misery the least,? Bergoglio told Latin American bishops in 2007, according a recent profile in the National Catholic Reporter. ?The unjust distribution of goods persists, creating a situation of social sin that cries out to Heaven and limits the possibilities of a fuller life for so many of our brothers.?

The new pope is known to be conservative on social issues. He has opposed abortion and gay marriage, and in 2010 he drew the ire of Argentina?s president when he said that gay adoption was a form of discrimination against children.

Vote:?Was Pope Francis a good choice?

Argentina in 2010 became the first country in Latin America to legalize gay marriage. During the debate that preceded the change, Bergoglio called the bill ?a plan to destroy God?s plan.?

?This is no mere legislative bill,? he said. ?It is a move by the father of lies to confuse and deceive the children of God.?

Argentine President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner shot back that the then-cardinal was speaking in terms ?really reminiscent of the times of the Inquisition.?

As archbishop, Bergoglio had the option to live in a palace but chose a simple apartment, according to the National Catholic Reporter. He gave up a limousine for the bus, and cooks his own meals.

In the first act of his papacy, he chose the name Francis, becoming the namesake of St. Francis of Assisi, who gave up his riches and chose a life of poverty and prayer.

He was born in Buenos Aires on Dec. 17, 1936, his father an Italian railway worker. He was elevated to cardinal in 2001 by Pope John Paul II.

At 76, he had been considered by some observers too old for the job ? particularly following Benedict, who said that at 85 he was no longer healthy enough to lead the church. Francis has only one lung, the other removed because of an infection when he was a teenager.

Still, Egan said: ?I can assure you that he is not feeble in any way.?

Related: Single lung not likely to hinder new pope

His official biographer has said that Francis has both keen political instincts and self-effacing humility, and that he would encourage a kind of shoe-leather evangelism within the church. He is known to walk the streets of Buenos Aires to talk to the people.

He told priests in Argentina last year: ?Jesus teaches us another way: Go out. Go out and share your testimony, go out and interact with your brothers, go out and share, go out and ask. Become the word in body as well as spirit.?

Perhaps helping him overcome the traditional reluctance to elect a Jesuit pope, he fell out of favor among some Jesuits in Argentina after he was elected to the title of Jesuit provincial in 1973.

Argentina was ruled in the late 1970s by a brutal military dictatorship, and many Jesuits were drawn to a progressive activist movement within the church known as liberation theology. Church leaders backed the dictatorship publicly, and Bergoglio discouraged priests from political activism.

Two of his Jesuit priests who followed the liberation theology movement were kidnapped from the slums by the military regime in 1976. Bergoglio personally appealed to the dictator, Jorge Videla, and had them freed. One of the priests later accused Bergoglio of effectively handing them over to the death squads in the first place.

Marcos Brindicci / Reuters

Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio of Argentina was elected to lead the Catholic Church following the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI.?

Bergoglio told his biographer, Sergio Rubin, that he often hid people on church property during the regime years and once gave his own identity papers to a man to help him get out of the country.

He later was sent to a school in northern Argentina to teach high school chemistry, an assignment seen as a type of exile, before the archbishop of Buenos Aires recalled him to be his auxiliary bishop.

?He?s a strong man, a man who can put up with criticism,? said George Weigel, NBC News? Vatican analyst. ?Cardinal Bergoglio put up with a lot of criticism from his brother Jesuits for many years.?

Francis earned a degree in chemistry and was ordained a priest in December 1969. He was named archbishop of Buenos Aires in 1998.

He was said to be the runner-up the last time cardinals met to choose a pope. An anonymous account of the 2005 conclave said that he had the support of some of the more liberal cardinals before giving up the fight and telling his backers to vote for Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, who became Benedict XVI.

Related:?New pope: 'Pray for me and I will see you soon'?

The account was attributed to a cardinal who leaked his diary to an Italian publication. It said that Francis, then Bergoglio, amassed 40 votes, more than half of what he would have needed for election, but still trailed Benedict after three ballots. His candidacy faltered on the fourth ballot, the diary said.

As Bergoglio cast his ballot beneath Michelangelo?s ?Last Judgment,? the account said: ?He had his face fixed on the image of Christ judging the souls at the end of time. A suffering face that implored: God, don?t to this to me.? The cardinal later declined to comment on the account.

By choosing a name no pope had chosen before, he may be signaling an era of rebirth for a church troubled by corruption and a sexual abuse crisis.

?We have to avoid the spiritual sickness of a self-referential church,? the new pope said before the conclave, according to the National Catholic Reporter. ?It?s true that when you get out into the street, as happens to every man and woman, there can be accidents. However, if the church remains closed in on itself, self-referential, it gets old. Between a church that suffers accidents in the street, and a church that?s sick because it's self-referential, I have no doubts about preferring the former.?

Niacin therapy shows no benefits, has some harmful effects

Mar. 9, 2013 ? A highly anticipated study evaluating a combination of the vitamin niacin with the anti-flushing agent laropiprant finds the therapy provides no benefit to and may even be harmful for patients with vascular disease, according to research presented today at the American College of Cardiology's 62nd Annual Scientific Session. Detailed trial data is presented here for the first time.

Heart Protection Study 2-Treatment of HDL to Reduce the Incidence of Vascular Events (HPS2-THRIVE) is the largest-ever study of niacin, commonly used to raise high-density lipoprotein (HDL) or "good" cholesterol and lower low-density lipoprotein (LDL) or "bad" cholesterol. The four-year study tested a combination of extended-release (ER) niacin with laropiprant in patients at risk for cardiovascular problems such as heart disease and stroke. The 25,673 patients in the study were randomized to receive ER niacin/laropiprant 2g/40mg or a placebo, and all received commonly prescribed LDL cholesterol-lowering medication simvastatin (with or without ezetimibe). The study did not meet the primary endpoint of reducing the chances of a major vascular event, defined as the composite of non-fatal heart attack or heart-related death, stroke, or need for angioplasty or bypass surgery. Patients receiving ER niacin/laropiprant had a similar number of major vascular events as patients receiving placebo (13.2 vs. 13.7 percent, p=0.29).

The study also found unexpected and significant excesses of bleeding (2.5 vs. 1.9 percent) and infections (8.0 vs. 6.6 percent) among the ER niacin/laropiprant patients. In addition, significantly higher numbers of patients receiving the study drug suffered serious known side effects including new onset diabetes (9.1 vs. 7.3 percent), diabetic complications (11.1 vs. 7.5 percent), gastrointestinal problems such as indigestion and diarrhea (4.8 vs. 3.8 percent), and skin issues including itching and rashes (0.7 vs. 0.4 percent).

"We are disappointed that these results did not show benefits for our patients," said Jane Armitage, FFPH, FRCP, professor at the University of Oxford and the lead author of the HPS2-THRIVE study. "Still, finding out a drug is not helping people is just as important as finding that it has benefits -- the net result is that people are healthier. Niacin has been used for many years in the belief that it would help patients and prevent heart attacks and stroke, but we now know that its adverse side effects outweigh the benefits when used with current treatments."

A high level of LDL cholesterol is a known risk factor for heart disease and stroke. Standard treatment for at-risk patients includes dietary and lifestyle changes, as well as commonly prescribed medications such as statins, cholesterol absorption inhibitors and resins. Still, heart disease and stroke continue to cause death and disability even in patients receiving these medications, notes Dr. Armitage, and there was hope that the addition of niacin to standard therapy would improve patient outcomes.

Niacin is a type of B-vitamin, but the therapeutic doses used to control cholesterol are about 100 times higher than the amount recommended as part of daily intake. Laropiprant was added to reduce the facial flushing caused by niacin. While there was some speculation that the trial's results may have been due to unexpected side effects of laropiprant, Dr. Armitage believes this is unlikely, as the lack of benefit on heart attacks and strokes is consistent with the recent AIM-HIGH study, which did not use laropiprant, and many of the side effects are known to be due to niacin.

In 2011, AIM-HIGH was halted early when researchers determined a lack of effect for niacin in reducing cardiovascular events. Some experts in the field dismissed AIM-HIGH's findings because of its smaller size and perceived lack of ability to demonstrate definitive outcomes. Dr. Armitage notes that the size and scope of HPS2-THRIVE make its findings about niacin's outcomes and side effects reliable.

Patients taking niacin preparations to prevent heart disease should consider talking with their health care providers to determine whether the therapy is appropriate to continue.

ER niacin/laropiprant has been approved in 70 countries and was being sold in 40. The Food and Drug Administration was awaiting results from HPS2-THRIVE to license the drug in the U.S. In response to preliminary findings, the drug manufacturer Merck announced in December 2012 that it no longer planned to take the drug before the FDA for approval and in January suspended ER niacin/laropiprant from markets worldwide.

'Quakes?top self-destructing NY

If anyone remembers how the New York Red Bulls lost a lead last week against Portland, walking back a potential win into a draw, well, know this:

That was nothing!

The Red Bulls had a late lead Sunday night, about to make their way back east with four points (of a possible six) from two matches away from home to open 2013, darn good work by almost any measure. (Especially considering the matches meant two cross-country road trips.)

But things unraveled spectacularly for Mike Petke?s team over the last 10 minutes Sunday; San Jose scored in the 83rd minute and again in stoppage time for a 2-1 win at Buck Shaw Stadium.

Red Bulls star Thierry Henry, remember, had some less than flattering things to say about his teammates after last week?s second-half clunker, about the club?s need for more high-level know-how. ?So what in the world will the famous Frenchman think now? (And more to the point, will he keep it to himself?)

Credit the San Jose Earthquakes, who finally found a little of that missing 2012 magic, concocting a big rally that looked so familiar from last year?s sensational Supporters Shield run.

It seemed quite unlikely, too. Still missing from San Jose?s selections are bothersome strikers Alan Gordon and Steven Lenhart, speedy Marvin Chavez and skillful Simon Dawkins in the midfield and Steven Beitashour coming forward from his right back position. (All are injured except for Dawkins, who is back in England, now with Aston Villa.)

But second half sub Adam Jahn got the Earthquakes first goal of the season 83 minutes into Sunday evening when left unmarked at the far post.

Then, it was Jahn once again making something happen in stoppage time. Red Bulls left back Roy Miller was waving and arm where arms don?t need to be, preventing Jahn?s header off a corner kick from going goal-ward.

Goalkeeper Luis Robles, who had his share of shaky moments Sunday, came up with a huge stop. But Miller ? well, what got into the man?

He was responsible for two late fouls that gave San Jose dangerous free kicks. Then his hand ball gifted San Jose with the penalty kick. And to put the cherry on this parfait of awful, Miller stepped into the penalty area so early prior to Wondolowski?s spot kick, referee Ricardo Salazar had little choice but to call for the re-kick.

Red Bulls players protested, but Miller was in so ridiculously early, Salazar made the correct call.

The 10-minute spell was an absolute fiasco.

Here?s Jahn?s 83rd minute equalizer. (Full highlights will go up as soon as the package is available.)

Stocks gain for sixth day on strong jobs growth

NEW YORK (AP) ? A burst of hiring in February pushed stocks higher on Wall Street.

The Dow Jones industrial average gained 67.58 points, or 0.5 percent, to 14,397.07. The index surpassed its previous record close Tuesday and logged a sixth straight increase Friday.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 6.92 points, or 0.5 percent, to 1,551.18. The Nasdaq composite advanced 12.28 points, or 0.4 percent, to 3,244.37.

U.S. employers added 236,000 jobs last month and the unemployment rate fell to 7.7 percent from 7.9 percent in January, the Labor Department reported. That's far better than the 156,000 job gains and unemployment rate of 7.8 percent that economists surveyed by FactSet expected.

The strong job growth shows that employers are confident about the economy despite higher taxes and government spending cuts.

Optimism that hiring is picking up has been one of the factors bolstering the stock market this year. Stocks have also gained on evidence that the housing market is recovering and company earnings continue to growing.

Stocks have also been boosted by continuing economic stimulus from the Federal Reserve.

The U.S. central bank began buying bonds in January 2009 and is still purchasing $85 billion each month in Treasury bonds and mortgage-backed securities. That has kept interest rates near historic lows, reducing borrowing costs and encouraging investors to move money out of conservative investments like bonds and into stocks.

Investors have also been pondering what the Fed's next move will be. That question was in especially sharp focus Friday after the government reported the surge in hiring last month.

Andres Garcia-Amaya at JPMorgan Asset Management said that the strong jobs report may heighten speculation that the Fed will end its stimulus sooner than investors had anticipated, which would be a negative for the stock market.

"If the economy maintains or increases the pace of job creation....that could change the Fed's stance," said Garcia-Amaya. "That could mean that the Fed could take the 'punch bowl' away."

The Dow has gained 9.9 percent this year and is trading at record levels, having broken its previous record of 14,164 on Tuesday. The Standard & Poor's 500 index is up 8.8 percent since the start of the year, and is less than 1 percent short of its all-time high close of 1,565 set Oct. 9, 2007.

The stock market is drawing in more investors as it continues to surge.

Investors put $3.2 billion into stock mutual funds in the week ending Wednesday, data provider Lipper reported Friday. That's the ninth straight week of net inflows to stock funds, bringing this year's total to $59 billion.

Friday's jobs report strengthens the case of stock market bulls, who say the economy is gaining momentum following a long and tepid recovery after the financial crisis and Great Recession, said JJ Kinahan, chief derivatives strategist at TD Ameritrade.

"It gives hope to those that say this rally isn't just about the Fed, it's about the economy recovering," said Kinahan. "It's giving people confidence that maybe the economy is turning the corner."

The Dow is up 120 percent since reaching a 12-year low during The Great Recession. The index bottomed out almost exactly four years ago, on March 9, 2009, at 6,547. The S&P 500 has gained 129 percent since hitting its own bottom of 676 on the same date.

McDonald's contributed the most to the Dow's gains, rising $1.62, or 1.7 percent, to $98.71. The fast-food restaurant chain reported that a key sales figure fell 3.3 percent in February, but the decline wasn't as bad as analysts were expecting.

H&R Block had the biggest percentage gain on the S&P 500, advancing $2.30, or 9.2 percent, to $27.28.

The company said late Thursday that its net loss widened because of a delay to the start of this year's tax season. The stock got a boost, though, after CEO William Cobb said on a conference call that the company was winning market share, Barrington Research analyst Joe Janssen said.

The yield on the 10-year Treasury note, which moves inversely to its price, rose to 2.06 percent from 2 percent Thursday. The yield is at its highest in 11 months.

Among stocks making big moves;

? Pandora gained $2.06, or 17.6 percent, to $13.79 after the Internet radio company issued a strong profit forecast and said its mobile business was improving. Pandora also said its CEO, Joseph Kennedy, would leave.

? Skullcandy fell $1.51, or 22.5 percent, to $5.21 after the headphone maker projected a big loss and a drop in sales for the current quarter. The company said this year's results will likely be worse than in 2012.

? Foot Locker fell $2.52, or 7.1 percent, to $32.79 even after reporting that its fiscal fourth-quarter profit jumped 28 percent. An extra sales week helped boost earnings, but analysts were expecting more.

Help building ecommerce site - UK Business Forums

I think your best option would be to hire a web developer to set up something for you and to support you later on. It sounds like you want someone to hold your hand and guide you through it so an independent developer may be better for you than an agency the only downside is if the independent dissapears you will need to find a replacement.

The one click installs on your hosting are just the beginning but pretty simple to do and quite standard on many hosting solutions. I would leave it where it is for now and see how it performs once your site is up there as that is the main reason to move hosting providers not for the scripts they offer. I would also not look to hire web development from your hosting provider, many don't offer this service anyway but their core business is hosting and running servers not web development and ebusiness so even if you do find one that offers this service you may find it is poor in comparison. There will be exceptions this of course but whether you will be able to spot them without experience is difficult.

Many people will jump on and recommend all kinds of ecommerce platforms for you every developer has their favourite system but of course it depends on what you want to sell and how you want to sell it. Mine is woo commerce as the flexibility and freedom it offers to help improve traffic to conversion is fab.

It is built on wordpress which will be in your list of scripts and you add it as a plugin, its free. However you may need someone to help you with updates in the future and setting it up.

If I was you I would stay away from magento if you don't have budget, it is a great system out of the box but it can be very expensive down the line to get developers to adapt. Most of my geek collegues have moved from magento to woo after I recommended it and have never looked back.
Prestashop is good as a base but limited (in comparison) in features that can be added as your business grows.

Hope this helps

Mob in Pakistani city torches Christian homes

LAHORE, Pakistan (AP) ? Hundreds of people in the eastern Pakistani city of Lahore attacked a Christian neighborhood Saturday and set fire to homes after hearing accusations that a Christian man had committed blasphemy against Islam's prophet, said a police officer.

Blasphemy is a serious crime in Pakistan that can carry the death penalty but sometimes outraged residents exact their own retribution for perceived insults of Islam's Prophet Muhammad. Pakistan is overwhelmingly Sunni Muslim and people of other faiths, including the nation's small Christian community, are often viewed with suspicion.

The incident started Friday when a young Muslim man accused a Christian man of committing blasphemy by making offensive comments about the prophet, according to Multan Khan, a senior police officer in Lahore.

A large crowd from a nearby mosque went to the Christian man's home on Friday night, and Khan said police took him into custody to try to pacify the crowd. Fearing for their safety, hundreds of Christian families fled the area overnight.

Khan said the mob returned on Saturday and began ransacking Christian homes and setting them ablaze. He said no one in the Christian community was hurt, but several policemen were injured when they were hit with stones as they tried to keep the crowd from storming the area.

The scene was chaotic. An Associated Press photographer on the scene said roughly 50 homes and a small church were set on fire. One man was seen carrying a dog and some puppies from a burning house. Refrigerators, washing and sewing machines, cooking pots, beds and other household goods were ripped from homes, smashed and torched in the streets.

One Christian couple from the neighborhood said they went to their Muslim neighbors' house on Friday night after people came looking for the Christian man accused of blasphemy. Ishaq Masih said the Muslim neighbors sheltered the couple for the night and then gave them money to leave the area in the morning.

Such accusations of blasphemy in Pakistan can prompt huge crowds to take the law into their own hands. Once an accusation is made it's extremely difficult to get it reversed, partly because law enforcement officials do not want to be seen as being soft on blasphemers.

Also on Saturday, four people were killed and 25 were wounded when a bomb exploded inside a mosque of the Sunni Barelvi sect in the northwestern city of Peshawar. The bomb was planted in a bookshelf inside the mosque and was detonated by remote control when noon prayers started, said senior police officer Imtiaz Khan.

Peshawar, the capital of Khyber Pakhtoonkhwa province, has been the site of several terrorist attacks in recent months. The city is surrounded by lawless tribal regions where al-Qaeda and Pakistani Taliban have hideouts.

The Pakistani military has carried out several operations in the area, but intermittent terrorist attacks continue.

Justin Bieber is recovering after fainting backstage at a concert in London.

A spokeswoman for Bieber told The Associated Press late Thursday that the 19-year-old pop star was given oxygen and took a 20-minute reprieve after fainting backstage at London's O2 Arena.

In a video of the concert posted online, Bieber's manager appeared on stage Thursday and told the crowd that the singer was feeling "very low of breath" but would return to finish the show.

The "Baby" singer is in London to perform four concerts at the O2 arena. He was widely criticized for arriving late to his first show Monday.
