The Owego-Aplachin School District is ready to reduce its power usage to lessen demand on the grid because of the stretch of hot weather we've been in.
When there was a hot-spell about a month and a half go, OA cut its usage by about 30 percent when compared to what it usually uses. The district partners with a company based in Buffalo called Energy Curtailment Specialists. When there's concern that power grids may get overloaded, ECS asks its partners to reduce power usage. OA receives a small percentage of the money ECS gets paid during cutback events.
Eric Kochis says, "If the event is called then we will reduce as much load as we can to shutdown systems that are not critical at that point. For instance, in our computer network we might reduce power to a couple of our servers, we'll have our employees turn off the power in their offices."
OA has also made a video that explains its efforts to conserve energy. It's posted on YouTube. Type in OA Schools Energy Management and it will be the first video to pop up.
